Developing
an environmental control chamber for excimer laser processing of collagen
structures




Abstract: Collagen
structures can be used for correcting refractive errors of the human eye. This
technology has the potential to be used as kind of permanent contact lenses.
However, such tissue structures need to be processed by means of laser devices
in a controlled environment and under predetermined processing conditions.

Description

Processing
collagen structures requires control of the environmental condition during the
laser processing and the metrology used to quantify the processing results. Thus, there is a need for the development of
a process chamber that can be integrated into the manufacturing process. Such processed collagen structures, when
implanted into patients eyes, hold a great promise for their capability to
correct refractive errors (far- and short sightedness, presbyopia)

The
main focus of this proposed master thesis / semester project is to design,
build and test a functional prototype of a process chamber. A thorough
characterization of the physical properties of the tissue processing will
determine the environment that is required to be controlled to achieve reliable
tissue shaping with the laser systems. To test the functional prototypes,
tissue samples will be processed and measured by means of high resolution
optical coherence tomography.



Goal

To
engineer 3D chamber that highly controls the environment of the collagen during
laser processing.
