PhD position in Economics (100%)

at the
Institute of Economic Research of the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in
the following fields: experimental economics, energy/environmental economics, behavioral
economics, and information economics.

Job starts: 1 October 2017

Term: 4 years (renewable each year)

Location: Neuchâtel, Switzerland

Job description: The objective of the position is to write research papers in applied
economics, combining theory and empirical analysis to inform the design of
public policies, and ultimately earn a PhD in Economics. The successful
candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Bruno Lanz
(‌site/brunolanzwebpage/) and will contribute to a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
research project. The project focuses on (i) theory and evidence on credence
goods, (ii) the provision of network infrastructure, and (iii) elicitation of
time and risk preferences. Results from the project will contribute to
informing the design of environmental / energy policy. The appointment
is renewable each year for a maximum of four years, and salary is in accordance
with the SNSF salary scales for doctoral students.

The focus of this position is on research, although the candidate will
be required to complete core PhD-level courses in economics as part of her/his
doctoral work (e.g.‌swiss-program/). S/he will also be expected to participate in the activities organized
by the Institute (incl. our weekly seminar series). The University
of Neuchâtel provides excellent conditions for research, and is conveniently
located near the lake of Neuchâtel, with outstanding infrastructure and quality

Applicant profile: The
candidate should hold (or be close to finish) a master degree in economics or
another relevant field, and have a good intuition for empirical economic
research. Interest in economic experiments, energy policy and/or behavioral
economics is an advantage. The candidate will demonstrate a strong potential
to produce high-quality research, which demands an excellent command of

academic referees who could be contacted for reference letters), a transcript
of grades from the master degree, GRE scores (if available), and the
candidate’s master dissertation. For candidates who have not yet completed
their master degree, please indicate this in your cover letter, append a list
of completed courses / grades by the time of the application, and describe your
intended dissertation work in the cover letter. Candidates who have not taken
the GRE should be prepared to do so by February 2018.
